Introducing Analytics & Performance: Know Which Listings Actually Make Money

Built-in, privacy-friendly analytics that track the full monetization funnel — from impressions to leads — plus demand signals that show what your visitors are searching for and what you're missing.

Stop flying blind

Until now, running a directory meant guessing. You could see pageviews in Google Analytics, sure — but pageviews don't tell you which listings are getting contacted. They don't tell you whether charging for a featured spot is actually worth it. They don't tell you what people are searching for that you don't have listed yet.

And to get even those basic numbers, you had to wrangle a GA tag, configure events, and then slap a cookie consent banner on your site — because generic analytics tools aren't built with privacy in mind.

Today that changes. Every MakeADir directory now has Analytics & Performance baked right in. No tag, no setup, no cookie banner. Just the numbers that matter for a directory business.

Two views, one goal: understand what's working

The new dashboard is split into two complementary views — Analytics for the big-picture traffic story, and Performance for the monetization detail that makes a directory different from any other website.

Analytics — your traffic & audience at a glance

The Analytics view gives you the fundamentals, presented cleanly so you can spot trends without a data science degree:

  • Visitors, visits, and pageviews — with period-over-period percentage changes so you know which direction things are moving
  • Live visitors — see who's browsing your directory right now
  • Engagement metrics — bounce rate, pages per visit, average time on page, and which pages people enter and exit through
  • Traffic sources broken down by channel: Organic Search, Direct, Social, Referral, Paid, and Email — the same GA4-style grouping you'd expect, but without the complexity
  • Referrers, campaigns (UTM), geography, and device/browser/OS — so you know who your audience is and how they reach you
  • Automatic paid-traffic detection — the platform recognizes Google, Meta, Bing, and TikTok ad clicks (gclid, fbclid, msclkid, ttclid, and more) and attributes them to Paid correctly, with zero manual tagging

Every metric comes with a comparison to the previous period. You don't just see a number — you see whether it went up or down.

Performance — the directory monetization view

This is where things get interesting. Generic analytics tools treat every page the same. But in a directory, a listing page isn't just a page — it's a product. It has an impression, it gets viewed, someone clicks through to the business, and ideally, someone contacts them. That's a monetization funnel, and now you can see it per listing.

The per-listing funnel tracks five stages:

  • Impressions — how many times the listing appeared in search results, category pages, or collections
  • Views — how many times someone opened the full listing page
  • Outbound clicks — clicks to the business's website, phone, directions, or social profiles
  • Leads — real contact actions: phone taps, WhatsApp messages, email clicks, and direction requests
  • CTR — click-through rate from impression to view, so you know which listings catch attention

But the real headline feature is featured vs. non-featured ROI. You can now compare, side by side, how featured listings perform against non-featured ones. Do they get more views? More clicks? More leads? If you're selling featured placements — or thinking about it — you now have hard data to justify the price. And for existing featured-listing clients, you have renewal proof sitting right there in the dashboard.

Earlier this year we shipped pay-to-publish and featured listing capabilities, and recently we added paid membership tiers. Performance analytics ties it all together — it's the missing piece that turns those monetization features from "hope this works" into "here's the proof."

Beyond individual listings, the Performance view also shows you:

  • Traffic that converts — which acquisition channels actually drive clicks and leads, not just visits
  • Outbound clicks by type — website vs. phone vs. directions vs. social, so you know how visitors prefer to connect
  • A live "N listings being viewed now" badge and a recent contact activity feed — real-time proof your directory is working
  • Content → listing attribution — which categories, collections, and blog posts are driving visits to listings

You can switch the entire Performance view between listings, categories, collections, and blog posts. Pick the lens that matters most to your business model.

Demand signals — what visitors want (that you might not have)

One of the most valuable things a directory owner can learn is what people are searching for. The new internal search analytics surface exactly that:

  • Top searches — the most common queries visitors type into your directory's search box
  • Zero-result searches — this is the gold mine. These are searches where your directory came up empty. Every zero-result query is a lead for a new listing you could add, a new category you could create, or a niche you haven't tapped yet
  • Filter & facet demand — which categories and attributes people filter by most often, so you know what your audience cares about when narrowing down results

Zero-result searches alone can pay for the platform. One directory owner might discover that 30 people a month search for "24-hour electrician" and there are none listed — that's a direct signal to recruit that type of business, or create a premium listing tier targeting exactly that demand.

Privacy-first by design — no cookie banner

All of this tracking is cookieless. The system uses a daily-rotating salted hash (the same approach trusted tools like Plausible use) to count unique visitors without storing anything on the visitor's device. No cookies, no fingerprinting, no personal data — which means no consent prompt required under GDPR.

Your directory stays clean, fast, and compliant. No cookie banner cluttering the experience. No legal headaches. Just the data you need to run your business.

Zero setup — it's already there

There's nothing to install, no script to paste, no tag to configure. If you have a MakeADir directory, Analytics and Performance are already live in your sidebar. Open your dashboard, click Analytics or Performance, and you'll see your data.

This is the advantage of native analytics. We know the platform, we know what a listing is, we know what a lead action looks like — so the tracking is built into the product, not bolted on from the outside. That's why we can show you a per-listing monetization funnel that no generic analytics tool can give you.

From data to revenue

The goal of analytics isn't more numbers — it's more revenue. With the Performance view, you can now answer the questions that actually move the needle:

  • "Is charging for featured listings worth it?" — compare featured vs. non-featured CTR and leads
  • "Which categories should I grow?" — look at category-level views and outbound clicks
  • "What should I list next?" — check zero-result searches for unmet demand
  • "Where should I spend on ads?" — see which channels drive leads, not just traffic
  • "How do I justify renewal prices?" — show a featured listing client their impression-to-lead data

If you've been running a directory and wondering whether it's actually working — or how to make money from it — the answer is now in your sidebar. If you haven't explored monetization yet, we've written about featured listings as a revenue driver and using data to guide your monetization strategy. Combine those with the new Performance dashboard, and you've got everything you need to turn a directory into a business.
