Create paid membership plans, restrict listings to specific tiers, and build a sustainable recurring revenue stream — all without writing a single line of code.
We're excited to announce one of the most requested features on our roadmap: Paid Membership Tiers are now live on MakeADir. Directory owners can now create subscription-based membership plans, collect recurring payments via Stripe, and gate listings behind specific tiers — unlocking a genuine recurring revenue channel for your directory.
One-off listing fees and featured spot purchases are great, but they can be unpredictable. Paid memberships turn your directory into a subscription business. Instead of chasing every transaction, you build a base of recurring revenue that grows month over month.
For directory owners, this means:
For your users, paid tiers offer premium placement, exclusive visibility, and access to features that free listings simply don't get.
Paid membership tiers give you a flexible monetization layer that sits on top of your existing directory. Here's what's included:
We've also retired the separate user groups concept. Tiers now handle both access control and monetization in one place — fewer concepts to manage and a cleaner mental model: what you pay defines what you can see. For directory owners, it's less configuration. For users, it's a straightforward path: pick a tier, unlock the listings that match. No more juggling groups and memberships separately.
This is where the real power lies. With visibility controls tied directly to tiers, you can gate listing access behind any membership level. Want to create a premium-only section of your directory? Hide high-value listings behind a Pro membership. Running a B2B directory with tiered access to leads? Grant top-tier members exclusive visibility. Free-tier users see the basics; paying members unlock the full directory.
Setting up paid membership tiers takes just a few minutes:
Stripe handles the heavy lifting — subscriptions, invoices, failed payment retries, and cancellations. You focus on building your directory.
From your users' perspective, the experience is seamless. When signing up, they're presented with your membership tiers and can choose the plan that fits their needs. Once logged in, their profile page shows their current membership status along with a Manage Membership button — giving them full control to upgrade, downgrade, or cancel at any time.
Paid Membership Tiers are available on the Trio and Agency plans. If you're on the Solo or Free plan and want to unlock memberships, you can upgrade anytime from the Billing page in your dashboard.
This is just the beginning. We're already working on deeper membership features — think member-only content pages, exclusive categories, and richer membership analytics. But we want to hear from you too. Should paid members get permanently featured listings that always sit at the top regardless of freshness? What about tier-gated discounts on one-off listing upgrades? Or custom member badges that show up next to every listing a paying user owns? Drop your ideas on the roadmap or join the conversation on Discord.
